What did you just say?

In USA:

Doctor, "We have your results back. I have good news an bad news news. The bad news is that the biopsy shows that you have breast cancer. However the good news is that it is still limited to a small area in the breast. We have two options, one is removing the whole breast and that should take care of it, and the other option which many women prefer is removing only the part of the breast invaded by the cancer and giving you radiation treatment afterwards. There are complications of the radiation treatment that can invlove the skin or the lung underneath and might show up a few months after the treatment, however you will be able to preserve the breast. You can take a few days to think about the options. Meanwhile we need to run some hormonal studies on the biopsy taken to guide us into what treatment options you might require. Chemotherapy is not out of the question and it can cause a few side effects that I am willing to discuss with you however it has been shown to significantly impact your quality of life and survival in ten years. We have rates of resposne as high as 85% in some studies if the hormonal studies come back positive. Here is my number if you need to contact me. After hours call the other number below......"

I wonder if the doctor feels for the patient in this case...I mean after a while does it turn to aroutine?

Lubna... yes it is, but someone has to do it

commentor number i don't know how to write down your name let alone reply to you

hala... right

tiger.. exactly they don't like to be reminded about it, it becomes history

anonymous... hehe people call it fifty million things except cancer

gaith... yep

gardenia.... it's not about feelings, it's more about not telling the patients exactly what they want and what are their options for treatment. Some patients are given chemotherpay without even them knowing it or knowing they have cancer... doctors many times assume they don't have the right to know just because they're too old or maybe not too smart to understand, but it's their life

Good one hareega! But in all honesty we all know that's old women talk. In fact, and comparetively speaking, Jordan is very advanced medically! See, if you exclude the hundreds (if not thousands) of patients who die annually due to medical mistakes and the other fatal diseases that are caused from medical tools being forgotten inside patients, then you'll get where we are :-)

bass fee ishee, and you are a doctor, correct me if i am wrong, till today, everything about cancer is mere statistics, there has been no real scientific or medical explanation behind this disease... it REALLY sort of standing on everybody's door step, waiting for someone to call it :s creepy!

maryam I don't totally agree with you. For many cancers we know how they develop from the moment the cell divides in an abnormal way, we know which genes among thousands are involved and a lot of the most recent and wonderful ways to treat cancer is based on these new scientific evidence.

But who will get cancer and who will not, this is uually difficult to predict, but stattistcis can be very helkpful. We knoe that if lady had her 2 sisters and her mother develop breast and ovarioan cancer then her chances are extremely high, but if it was pancreatic cancer the chances are less common and so on.
