Is this picture offensive?

This is a photo taken for Spain's national basketball team in Spain. They were sponsored by a Chinese company. The team's photographer told them to push the outside corner of their eyes to give it an Asian-looking eye appearance.
I assume that instead of telling them "Cheeeese", he just screamed "Chineeese".

The Chinese and many Asian groups outside China are furious. They considered this photo to be very offensive. The Spaniards mentioned they meant no harm and had good intentions behind the photo.

If you'd ask me, I would say there's nothing offensive in this photo. It's funny. It's hilarious. However, who am I to decide. Same for you, if you're not Asian who are you to decide?? Spain's basketball team played with China 3 days ago and they were booed throughout the entire game, and that's very unusual about the Chinese who have been very welcoming during these Games. So apparently, they were angry.

I think any speech or gesture is offensive if the targeted race or ethnicity consider it so.

It is offensive.

Ask any Asian person; Have you ever had this gesture done to you in any instance that wasn't meant to be derogatory.

Maybe the Spanish basketball team didn't mean it to be offensive but it was poor judgement from both them and the Chinese sponsers who took the photo.

The fact that they were booed stands to prove this

and as Stephen said it was poor judgment.

Their gesture was used to poke fun of Asian people. "Slang Eyes".

When doing business in a foreign country there are certain business etiquette to learn. None of which is to poke fun of that race/country.

Peace,

Khaled

I think it all depends on the intention. I don't think they meant it to be offensive.

In fact the positive interpretation we want to look Chinese!

mab3oos.. yes shmags would have been really cool, i would love to see penelope cruz wearing one

stephen, I hear you. I feel they are very sensitiive to the eye thing, with by if this gesture is done or if someone comments on it. I know a few Asians who got really upset when some Asians do plastic surgeries to widen their eyes. They accuse those who have the surgery of being ashamed of being Asian.

Khaled, totally agree with you on that. Rispekt

Hani Obaid... I think they're very sensitive to the eye thing, and really it's better to avoid mentioning it to them at all.
Now for the few Asians living in Jordan I'm sure they've heard a bezillion of comments and jokes on their appearance!

You have got to be kidding me. OMG!!!!

Would a gesture to depict big Jewish noses be considered offensive to jews? or Arabs?

THIS IS RUDE. THE FACT YOU THINK IT'S OK IS FRIGHTING. But then again, I have seen many western educated Jordanians refer to blacks as niggers and 3abeed. Which is strange since common Jordanians do frown on such racist terms. I THINK MODERN JORDANIAN PARENTING IS A TOTAL FUCKUP.

Here is a tip for all retards out there. YOU DON'T DECIDE WHAT'S OFFENSIVE AND WHAT'S NOT FOR OTHERS. THEY DECIDE WHAT'S OFFENSIVE. LAUGHING AT SOMEONE'S EXPENSE IS RUDE, especially WHEN THEY ARE NOT LAUGHING.

Ali, keep your opinions on bad parenting to your parents, and try to stay in line when you talk to other people. If you've read the last sentence in the post you would have realized my opinion on the issue.

hamede, thanks for checking

It's not meant to be hurtful. Some people that do that mean it to be hurtful and inconsiderate of how people feel. My friends and I do it all the time and ps I am Japanese.
