I disagree with you. While it is still not easy on many Jordanians to keep up with life expenses, but things are far better than a decade ago. Yes, rich people are becoming richer and they are showing their money with the more opportunities of spending these days, and more people are becoming rich than before, but poor ratio are not expanding.

Our economy is doing well. There are a lot of opportunities for all, and there are a lot of success stories.

The middle class is still there, alive and bigger than ever.

Observer,
Middle class is a state of mind, middle class is how much expectations our youth have. With all the news I am hearing from jordan lately, I think that expectations are going down and frustration is growing and this is a very dangerous combination.

On the other hand, free market economy is the only way, government control makes people equally poor, while free market makes people unequally rich(if they know how to play it right) But there is a responsibility for the government to provide it's people with the resources they need to excel, and by that I mean equal quality education-which saldy we lack and what we have in jordan is what you can call without hestitation: Illetracy fighting centers; and that applies to universities before schools.

Alla yostor, o hashmi hashmi, o ya3eesh ya3eesh o yalla oshboko 7'anedbbek bse77et el freedom in jordan, loooloooleeesh, ta7', ta7', ta7'...Manasef.

moey.... Lebanon always had it and you can tell it didn't help with anything there.
I don't know much about Syria but I've heard they're having the same problem too.
MAny countries including the US is seeing this problem but the difference is that it is the US and we are Jordan.
They can survive.

hamede... you're welcome

anonymous... thanks

m kilany... i'm not an economist i'm just an observer and ironically staying away from Jordan makes the vision clearer.
Probably changing our taxation system should help a little bit.

adoosh, these lines also came across my mind when i was writing it and i quoted them before, very true

Things are great in Amman. There are a lot of success stories in Amman. I'm talking about the very basic things. Some lower-middle class citizens were able to let their smart kids go to medical school in Jordan for 15 JDs/credit hour, but now that it's 45 and will go up to 60-90 Jds they cannot afford it. Same thing applies to other faculties in public universities.

Health? It's affordable for most citizens to go to a public hospital and some medications and vaccines are free, but the health care in public hospitals is trashy, and in no way better than before.

Can the middle and lower class person now dream of owning a very small apartment if he'd work five years? No way. Can he own a used car after 5 years of work? Hardly ever. I'm not talking about citizens working in Amman, it's those who live outside it. There's no middle class there.

The difference is not only financial, it's becoming cultural as well. Lots of "Ammanites" found it difficult to believe that 60% supported Al Qaeda at one time in 2005 (just before the hotel attacks). I thought the number was an underestimate. Going to Zarqa for example you can tell that bin ladin and Zarqawi are still heroes for the majority.
Do you know that woman may get stoned, really stoned if they walk by themselves in certain areas?
The differences are huge that's why I feel we are becoming two people living in one country.

I dont know Hareega, I don't think that situation has ever been better. I, for sure, dont deny poverty in many places in Jordan, but I can't also dismiss progress. Economy numbers can give us a good insight. Maybe it is how you choose to look at the glass. I prefer to see it half full..

Observer,
Without any offense, please provide us with the figures and numbers that support your idea. Because, honestly, all the guys here are supporting hareega's idea -including me- on the basis of what they see in their daily lives.

Kindly, don't missunderstand me, I am not trying to criticise anyone, but I want you to convience us with your point of view.

Sophia, they always publish numbers in newspapers. I am sure that you would find them if you did some google search. I am a bit lazy to do so.

But what you would find is that our economy has been growing for around 6% in the past couple of years.

Every economic measure has been improved including the income per individual in Jordan. Those are official numbers. I know that you can find them on official websites :)
